This is an example of an encrypted email address.

Give it a try. Click on the email address to the right and test out the mailto link. Then look at the source code of this page. Notice that it does not contain an email address.

You should see:

href=”href=”mailto:lynelle@smartsmartsmart.com”>lynelle@smartsmartsmart.com
t.com”

Many sites are visited by robot crawlers looking for email addresses to collect for spam lists. This is an example of how I protect email addresses from this nefarious deed. By using encryption in my code, I can hide the addresses from robots.

I wrote a short script that changes the text so that the @ symbol is hidden from robots. Humans can read the email address and they can click on it to activate their browser’s mailto function. I also wrote a WordPress shortcode that incorporates this script. It can be simply added from the WordPress editor’s shortcode dropdown.
